2020: Week 21

Chin & Beard Suds Co are relatively new players in the Soap Market and are looking to do a bit of analysis around their competitors. To do this, they'll be looking at a variety of different metrics.

Market Share = Company Sales / Total Market Sales

Growth = (This Month Sales - Last Month Sales) / Last Month Sales

 Contribution to Growth = (This Month Sales - Last Month Sales) / Overall Last Month Sales

e.g. if calculating the Contribution to the Market's Growth then the numerator would use each Company's sales whilst the denominator would be the Total Market sales

Outperformance = Company A's Growth - The Growth of the Rest of the Market excluding Company A

Requirements

  • Input the data.
  • At a total sales level for each company (i.e. not taking Soap Scent into consideration): 
    • Calculate each company's Market Share for April. How many bps* has this changed from March's Market Share?
      • *10 bps = 0.01%
    • Calculate each company's Growth in April. 
    • Make sure everything is formatted nicely for a quick overview of each company's performance in April.
    • Output the data.
  • We notice that whilst Chin & Beard Suds Co have the smallest Market Share, they experienced the greatest growth this month!
    • Calculate the contribution to growth for the rest of the market excluding C&BS Co for each Soap Scent.
    • Calculate C&BS Co's contribution to growth for each soap scent.
    • Calculate the Outperformance of C&BS Co vs the Rest of the Market for each soap scent.
    • Output the data.

    • Bps Change
  • 5 rows (6 including headers)

Output 2:

2023: Week 2 - International Bank Account Numbers

Challenge By: Jenny Martin For week 2 of our beginner month, Data Source Bank has a requirement to construct International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs), even for Transactions taking place in the UK. We have all the information in separate fields, we just need to put it altogether in the following order: Inputs A list of the transactions, with information about the receiving bank account  A lookup table for the SWIFT Bank Codes  Requirements Input the data In the Transactions table, there is a Sort Code field which contains dashes. How to...Handle Free Text

Free isn't always a good thing. In data, Free text is the example to state when proving that statements correct. However, lots of benefit can be gained from understanding data that has been entered in Free Text fields. What do we mean by Free Text? Free Text is the string based data that comes from allowing people to type answers in to systems and forms. The resulting data is normally stored within one column, with one answer per cell. As Free Text means the answer could be anything, this is what you get - absolutely anything. From expletives to slang, the words you will find in the data may be a challenge to interpret but the text is the closest way to collect the voice of your customer / employee. The Free Text field is likely to contain long, rambling sentences that can simply be analysed. If you count these fields, you are likely to have one of each entry each.
