2024: Week 34 - The Prep School Birthday Cakes part 3

What's this? Our first 3 part challenge! Whilst the Prep School were thrilled with the revised Birthday Cake workflow we produced, they realised there had been an error in missing out one of the Bank Holidays that occur during term time. 

This holiday is the Early May Bank Holiday, taking place on 05/05/2025. This occurs during the Summer, term 5. From last week's solution, anyone who has a birthday on the 5th May is scheduled to have a cake on a public holiday, so we must adapt our workflow to fix this!

You can adjust your workflow from last week to meet this new requirement, or download our solution from last week and adapt that. 

The original dataset of student's dates of birth remains unchanged:

Requirements

  • Update the input to use the 2024 Week 34 input
  • Ensure that any birthdays on 5th May are rolled back to Friday 2nd May
    • Watch out for duplicate rows!
  • Output the data

3 fields:
  • Cake Needed On Date
  • Cake Weekday
  • Count of Cakes
185 rows (186 rows incl. header)
  • 2nd May should have 16 cakes
  • 23rd May should have 18 cakes

How to...Handle Free Text

Free isn't always a good thing. In data, Free text is the example to state when proving that statements correct. However, lots of benefit can be gained from understanding data that has been entered in Free Text fields. What do we mean by Free Text? Free Text is the string based data that comes from allowing people to type answers in to systems and forms. The resulting data is normally stored within one column, with one answer per cell. As Free Text means the answer could be anything, this is what you get - absolutely anything. From expletives to slang, the words you will find in the data may be a challenge to interpret but the text is the closest way to collect the voice of your customer / employee. The Free Text field is likely to contain long, rambling sentences that can simply be analysed. If you count these fields, you are likely to have one of each entry each.
