2024: Week 46 - DataFam Europe Special

This challenge comes to you live from the first ever DataFam Europe! We've teamed up with the Workout Wednesday team to bring you a special challenge. 

Since we're in London and very close to one of the most popular attractions (St Paul's Cathedral), we thought we could centre the challenge around popular London Attractions and their nearest Tube Stations. 

You'll need to clean up the inputs to create outputs ready for Tableau Desktop. 

Inputs

The inputs for this challenge can be downloaded from either Google Drive (as normal) or Data.World.

We have 3 inputs, which can be found in one single Excel File:
  1. London Tube Stations 

  2. Attraction Footfall 

  3. Location Lat Longs 

Requirements

  • Input the data
  • For the London Tube Stations table:
    • There are a lot of unnecessary fields, only keep information about the station name and location
    • Clean up the field names
    • There are a lot of duplicate rows. Make sure each row is unique (help)
  • For the Attraction Footfall table:
    • Filter out attractions with missing data
    • Reshape the data so there is a row for each year, for each attraction
    • The footfall values need to be multiplied by 1000 to give their true values
    • Calculate the average footfall for each attraction, whilst keeping all the detail of individual years. Call the new field 5 Year Avg Footfall (help)
    • Rank the attractions based on this 5 Year Avg Footfall (help)
  • For the Location Lat Longs table
    • The information about the latitude and longitude is contained in a single field, split these values into 2 separate fields 
  • Output the data as an Excel File, having each table as a separate sheet

The outputs for this challenge can be downloaded from either Google Drive (as normal) or Data.World.

Tube Locations

  • 3 fields
    • Station
    • Station Longitude
    • Station Latitude
  • 267 rows (268 including headers)

Attraction Footfall

  • 5 fields
    • Attraction Rank
    • Attraction
    • 5 Year Avg Footfall
    • Year
    • Attraction Footfall
  • 90 rows (91 including headers)

Attraction Locations

  • 3 fields
    • Attraction Name
    • Attraction Latitude
    • Attraction Longitude
  • 20 rows (21 including headers)
After you finish the challenge make sure to fill in the participation tracker, then share your solution on Twitter using #PreppinData and tagging @Datajedininja, @JennyMartinDS14 & @TomProwse1

How to...Handle Free Text

Free isn't always a good thing. In data, Free text is the example to state when proving that statements correct. However, lots of benefit can be gained from understanding data that has been entered in Free Text fields. What do we mean by Free Text? Free Text is the string based data that comes from allowing people to type answers in to systems and forms. The resulting data is normally stored within one column, with one answer per cell. As Free Text means the answer could be anything, this is what you get - absolutely anything. From expletives to slang, the words you will find in the data may be a challenge to interpret but the text is the closest way to collect the voice of your customer / employee. The Free Text field is likely to contain long, rambling sentences that can simply be analysed. If you count these fields, you are likely to have one of each entry each.
